Weekly Round Up (Week Four)

Another week over and the river has now returned to normal levels for the time of year. The area in the foreground of the picture is where the council with the backing of the Environment Agency reduced the height of the island that had been created by rocks and stone being washed down in the floods. This was done to ease the river levels when in flood condition to stop the river bursting it’s banks and causing damage to the surrounding green spaces and houses close by the river.

Weekly Round Up (Week Three)

I went for a Walk by the river on Sunday for my weekly river update. The water level has dropped by about 6ft and the water is running crystal clear again. The bank where the picture is taken from was under water last week.
Kent Westmorland Angling Association controls the fishing rights from both banks in the picture. On the left bank as you look at the picture the water can drop off to about 4ft, there is no wading from this side. The right bank is suitable for wading with a few nice pools and runs. Early and late season Salmon & Sea Trout runs through here are superb. There is also a good head of Brown Trout in this section of the river.

Weekly Round Up (Week Two)

Following all the torrential rain we have had over the last few days I went down the river for a picture. Taken on Sunday morning this pic shows the river in almost flood condition. The river has risen about 6feet due to the rain and snow melt from the Lake District Fells.

The area in the picture is at the lower end of the town section, which is free to fish. There is normally a couple of nice pools just below the bridge, where the fishing is very good. it is where the Sea Trout and Salmon tend to pool up waiting on the water levels to rise to enable them to get further up river to spawn.

Weekly Round Up (Week One)

I have decided to take a leaf out of Urban Flyfisher’s blog and post a weekly picture of the river Kent, just to see how the landscape, foliage and wildlife develop over the course of a year.
This first picture is taken about 200yards upstream of the fish pass. There is still quite a bit of ice around the area and some frost on the trees.

Fly Swap Flies

I recently received the flies from the fly swap that I took part in at the end of last year. I think that the flies are of a very good quality, and much better than some of the flies you will buy in most of the tackle shops here.
Above is a couple of pics of some of the best flies from the swap. I am looking forward to making my own versions of some of these flies and giving them a swim next season.

Happy New Year

Not posted much recently due to heavy work commitment over the Christmas period. So here is hoping you had a good Christmas. I hope the big man in red brought you all you wanted..

Looking back over the past year there has been many highs in my fishing life, mainly fish caught using flies that I have tied myself. I have also enjoyed visiting new fishing venues around the county, but mainly in South Lakeland. I am enjoying the project my boss gave me in putting together a booklet on fishing in the local area for the guests at the hotel.

Today one of our regular guests brought a copy of a fishing guide and asked me to mark the best venues within it for fishing for brown trout for when he is down next season.

Here’s wishing you all a very happy New Year and tight lines to you all

Cumbrian Earthquake

At about 11pm last night there was an earthquake, which registered 3.5 on the Richter scale near here with the epicentre at Torver near Coniston, only 12miles from Kendal as the crow flies. The effects of the quake were felt as far away as the Isle of Man, the Yorkshire Dales and the Borders of Scotland.
There was what sounded like very loud rumble of thunder and the house shook for about 20 seconds. My daughter was woken up by the noise and vibrations.
At first I thought it was a tree at the end of the terrace had fallen on the end house. But on checking the tree was still standing. There is no reported structural damage that I know of. It also look like the fishing will not be harmed.
Talking to my colleagues at work today they said that the bar glasses and pictures were rattling with the vibrations
